MONGOLIAN is widely spoken in two countries: 2.7 million people speak the language in Mongolia, and about the same number of people use Mongolian in the Chinese province of Inner Mongolia, though the latter number is in decline due to the increasing prominence there of Mandarin Chinese.

Writing in Mongolian

The traditional Mongolian script that goes from left to right in vertical columns running from top to bottom is used only in Inner Mongolia. The country of Mongolia has used Cyrillic since 1941 as part of a successful attempt to eradicate illiteracy. In electronic communication, it is also common to use the Latin alphabet.
